“The 8.15-mile relatively flat course starts at Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu, winds its way along the historic harbor, down Nimitz Highway, Kamehameha Highway and on to Aloha Stadium. Aid stations are at miles 3, 5, and 7 and at the finish. Entertainment along the entire course!”
I decided to sneak in the 2012 Great Aloha Run to prepare myself mentally and physically for next month’s half marathon. My friend Cindy had talked about signing up for a while and after missing the deadline for online registration on February 10th, we had to sign up in person at the expo and ended up paying $50.
It’s no secret that my knees have been bothering me, more so since the six mile jog on January 31st. Since then, I’ve had to stop and walk during my jogs when I felt the pain wasn’t worth risking further injury, especially with the half marathon a month away. Prior to yesterday’s event, my last jog was two days ago for 3.57 miles and I recall some pain in the right knee, having to walk a little bit, and fatigue even though this was a morning jog. As I was walking home, I came to the realization that I may have to choose between the Hapalua half marathon (13.1 miles) and Warrior Dash (3.01 miles course with 12 obstacles). I’m already signed up for the Honolulu Marathon in December so the Hapalua is mainly for mental and physical training and I really don’t want to miss out on Warrior Dash because I’ve always wanted to see how well I would do in an obstacle course. I told Cindy that I would sign up with her to do the Great Aloha Run and we’ll see come Monday if I’ll walk it or jog it.
It must’ve been a combination of the 29,000+ participants mixed with adrenaline and “Chocolate Outrage” GU energy gel that got me jogging shortly after fist pumping Cindy across the starting line. I don’t rehydrate during my jogs near the house because 1) they are very short distances and 2) there are no drinking fountains along the route but after getting water from the aid stations during yesterday’s run, it makes all the difference. The GU energy gel that I consumed halfway through definitely helped too. I’m going to start jogging with a water bottle and GU as the distance increases in my training.
