2012 GAR Photos Worth Ordering?

I FINALLY received an email from MarathonFoto that I had photos of myself from the Great Aloha Run. These are in addition to the one I found yesterday after browsing through 2,076 thumbnails.

I think the shaka pose is definitely worth consideration!

Out of 2076 Photos

This is the only one I could find of myself. Before browsing through 2,076 thumbnails, I entered my last name and bib number and selected the event and nothing was found. I swear you can clearly see my bib number in the photo.

2012 Great Aloha Run

“The 8.15-mile relatively flat course starts at Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu, winds its way along the historic harbor, down Nimitz Highway, Kamehameha Highway and on to Aloha Stadium. Aid stations are at miles 3, 5, and 7 and at the finish. Entertainment along the entire course!”

I decided to sneak in the 2012 Great Aloha Run to prepare myself mentally and physically for next month’s half marathon. My friend Cindy had talked about signing up for a while and after missing the deadline for online registration on February 10th, we had to sign up in person at the expo and ended up paying $50.

It’s no secret that my knees have been bothering me, more so since the six mile jog on January 31st. Since then, I’ve had to stop and walk during my jogs when I felt the pain wasn’t worth risking further injury, especially with the half marathon a month away. Prior to yesterday’s event, my last jog was two days ago for 3.57 miles and I recall some pain in the right knee, having to walk a little bit, and fatigue even though this was a morning jog. As I was walking home, I came to the realization that I may have to choose between the Hapalua half marathon (13.1 miles) and Warrior Dash (3.01 miles course with 12 obstacles). I’m already signed up for the Honolulu Marathon in December so the Hapalua is mainly for mental and physical training and I really don’t want to miss out on Warrior Dash because I’ve always wanted to see how well I would do in an obstacle course. I told Cindy that I would sign up with her to do the Great Aloha Run and we’ll see come Monday if I’ll walk it or jog it.

It must’ve been a combination of the 29,000+ participants mixed with adrenaline and “Chocolate Outrage” GU energy gel that got me jogging shortly after fist pumping Cindy across the starting line. I don’t rehydrate during my jogs near the house because 1) they are very short distances and 2) there are no drinking fountains along the route but after getting water from the aid stations during yesterday’s run, it makes all the difference. The GU energy gel that I consumed halfway through definitely helped too. I’m going to start jogging with a water bottle and GU as the distance increases in my training.

Here are some screenshots of the data gathered from my Garmin Forerunner 310XT watch and uploaded to Garmin Connect and RunKeeper.

The Hapalua half marathon is in 19 days. LET’S DO THIS!

Happy Birthday Max!

Max turned six last week Friday and nothing says “Happy Birthday” like a pizzle stick!

39 Days and Counting

I finally decided to be realistic with myself and instead of completing the Hapalua Half Marathon within a certain time, I just want to finish it. The same goes for the Honolulu Marathon in December. I found it really difficult to get motivated to go running yesterday as I was tired and my legs were still pretty tight from all that cycling on Sunday. My mom said she was going to go walking around the cemetery after I walked Max and Mitzi so I decided to follow her and jog around the cemetery and measure the distance. After jogging what appears to be at least 2.5 miles around the cemetery, I still had enough energy to want to run further. It was also cooling down a lot since the sun was going down and the skies were pretty cloudy.

39 Days and Counting

I jogged a 10K!

It’s now crunch time!

My go-to cocktail is Grey Goose and 7UP since I have yet to acquire the taste of wine. I don’t think you can really call this wine but whatever, it was good!

ChocoVine Original

It tasted like alcoholic chocolate milk!

Always an Adventure!

From the strong tradewinds, to the sighting of an endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal, to the filing of a police report, it’s never a dull day when Phillip and I go cycling!

Diamond Head Lighthouse

I've been meaning to take a picture of this on our last two cycling tours and I finally got it!

The Surly Tandem Parked at the Maunalua Bay Beach Park

We have yet to see other Surly Long Haul Truckers on the road.

A Bit More Distance and No iPhone

Today’s jog was the fourth of the week and also the most consistent I’ve been since I started training. I attempted to mix things up today by eating breakfast an hour before, jogging in the morning, adding a bit more distance, and tracking my distance and pace using my Garmin Forerunning 310XT GPS watch, leaving my iPhone at home. Running without music and the extra weight of my iPhone around my left arm doesn’t appear to be affecting anything. One thing to note was that I paused my watch for less than a minute while I was waiting at the traffic light and that bit of rest allowed me to sprint the home stretch!

A Bit More Distance

I added a bit more distance to Friday’s jog by running around the small loop inside the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park.
